We’ve hit a major milestone, team! In this article we’re celebrating 100 Blog Posts! Woo hoo!

Nobody said we couldn’t do it, but we did it anyway!

Back in the early months of 2023, a fresh-eyed Fishbird set out from the nest/ocean – to create a site for readers who love to travel, make art and find joy in the every day.

Whether you’ve been here from the start or are just joining us now, THANK YOU from the bottom of our fishy bird hearts for all of your support. You’re incredible and very appreciated!

Over the past 100 blog posts, we’ve shared the best of art and design (looking at you Toby Meatball). We’ve explored stunning accommodation (slept in the Clouds & in the shadow of a large peanut), celebrated the joy of books (never ever enough), and highlighted some of nature’s most captivating creatures (even those made out of fibreglass)!

Let’s celebrate 100 blog posts together and take a trip down memory lane. Every achievement is an opportunity to give yourself a pat on the back!

Here’s to the next 100 posts and beyond!

Happy Reading, friends!

IN THIS POST
100 blog posts - accommodation

There’s nothing the Fishbird Central Team love more than heading out of the city on a road trip. Well … maybe books … and sketching weird animals in people clothes … BUT hitting the open road sure is up there!

Over the last 100 blog posts we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy time in the countryside – eating our fill of peanuts in Kingaroy, and pointing at alpacas in Dayboro!

We’ve sat by the ocean and counted our lucky starfish in Caloundra, Maroochydore, Ballina and Burleigh; sipped wine and hunted for Maggie Beer in the Barossa and cuddled-up in many a Hinterland cabin.

Not for one second do we take our travelling adventures for granted – we recognise we’re very lucky to be able to stay in such amazing spots and we save our dollary-doos to prioritise just that.

Our listed accommodation reviews are not sponsored, so you always know that we’re sharing our honest opinion on how many toilets there are.

Saying that, if anyone WANTS to sponsor us, we promise we can still be honest while getting paid to ooh and aah at your cabin. Though keep in mind, we will still put all of your display pillows onto the floor.

100 sketching challenges

I’ve always wanted to learn draw, so you know what I did?

That’s right, I waited a sensible 43 years (you don’t want to spook the brushes) and then decided to make a start.

Every artist I followed (online and on the street) suggested that the only way to make art is to actually make the art – so I made art as often as I could, which turns out is once a day … for a while, and then sporadically as life allows.

The Fishbird Central Team love to create mini challenges to get obsessed about – and golly gouache we’d love it if you followed along! Come and play in the paints and pencils with us on our 100 Sketchy Animals or 100 Sketchy Faces challenges!

Tag us on Instagram or Facebook, so we can see what you create! Whatever your medium, the secret ingredient is you!

Art is about expressing yourself. And also it’s about sketching a bear in a little jacket who is the owner of a hipster coffee shop called HoneyBeans.

100 creatures

It is my life-long dream to visit every animal attraction that Australia – nay- the WORLD has to offer.

We’re all in agreement that animals are the greatest. You can often find us chortling at a chihuahua, laughing with a lizard or fan-girling over a fibreglass dinosaur. No animal attraction is too big, too small or too fake!

In the last 100 blog posts we’ve had Maleny macaws sit on our heads, explored a sheep museum in Naracoorte, made LEGO dinosaur footprints in Brisbane City, saved our chips from lazy lorikeets and faced-off against dragons in the Roma Street Parklands.

There are soooooooo many more creatures we want to feature, and we have a few waiting in the wings to be published in coming weeks. How exciting!

Grab your favourite bag of pellets, and join us as we pat our way through all the friendly fauna!

100 bookish bites

Books are our bag. And our bag is pretty big. It’s a big book bag and it’s getting bigger every year … for all the books. It’s bananas. But we like those too.

Fishbirdians are big readers who support book lovers of all shapes and sizes, including independent readers who run local bookshops!

We have reading challenges to help you decide what book to read next – channel your inner Patti LuPone and Agatha Christie

For readers who love to gamify their TBRs, we have a selection of book reviews and recommendations to help you fill all your reading prompts! Stuck on a prompt? Let us know and we’ll suggest some likely fictional fellows for you!

Snoop on lists of Book Awards with us! We’ve discovered so many great new authors and titles from the award nominee lists. It’s a great way to help whittle down to your next favourite read!

Have you started a bookish collection yet? We’re stocking up on our Penguin Crime Classics at the moment, and are always on the hunt for those tell-tale green spines.

We’re open to trying books from every genre! See if you can suggest a book to us that we’ll love that’s outside our go-to TBR. Our favourite stories to read include:

  • crime fiction of all flavours (except true crime)
  • haunted house/possession spookies
  • stories about people walking off into the wilderness to discover random things (think Appalachian trail vibes)
  • cosy crime where our protagonist (a baker/flower shop owner/bookseller) has to solve a crime they have no business being involved in
  • atmospheric gothic fiction
  • witty, funny fantasy/sci-fi (Terry Pratchett/Douglas Adams)

We love you – and we love books. Let’s love our Independent Bookshops together!

We’ve published 55 Bookish Bites! Check them out and let us know what genre you love to read and what Bookshop we should visit next!

100 side quests

Occasionally we leave the books, the cosy cabins and the creatures to themselves, and go off on a little side quest.

These are generally posts that don’t quite fit another category, but we still wanted to share with you.

In the early days, we thought you’d like to see us clean out our fridge and not eat our vegetables. And you did! We love it!

Since our heady fridge days, we’ve been visiting the Big Things scattered around Australia. If you take a peek at our FREE Fishbird Central Newsletter, you may even see us discovering 3 more Big Things! Woo hoo!

On every adventure we go on, you’re always on our minds. Not in a creepy way. You are the wind beneath our wings, the water beneath our fins and also probably beneath, beside and betwixt any other medium a Fishbird needs in order to move about.

We’ve published 5 Side Quests! Check them out and let us know where you’d like us to wander off to next!

Thank you for being with us on our Fishbird Central adventure for 100 blog posts!

And thank you for just being you!
