It’s time to make some more January Art in 2025!! 😀

We entered Week 2 of sketching in January, with our paintbrushes limber and Pinterest at the ready!

Having a reference image to sketch from makes it so much easier to train your eye and create a creature that looks like it might actually come from Earth!

Remember, when we make art, it’s not about perfection; it’s about discovering the joy of creating, and introducing yourself to a new animal friend that has an elaborate and amusing backstory!

With each animal you sketch and paint, you’ll grow in confidence, learn to embrace your style, and realise that starting is the hardest but most rewarding step.

So grab your brushes, your creatures, your favourite pencils and pens – and join us on this monthly adventure!

By the end of January, you won’t just have a collection of animal portraits – you’ll have the beginnings of a story that will echo through the ages.

The Beef Busters

Who did we sketch?:

Meet the Beef Busters – Chocolate, Caramel and Velvet! 

Character Bio:

The Beef Busters – Chocolate, Caramel, and Velvet – are 3 determined dairy cows with a knack for sniffing out secrets and a penchant for justice.

Chocolate, the brains of the operation, never misses a clue with her sharp wit and perfectly coiffed hairdo. Caramel, the muscle, has a soft heart but a head hard enough to knock sense into any stubborn civilian. Velvet, the charmer, smooth-talks her way into barns and coops for intel purposes – and also to steal eggs.

Together, they’ve been working under-udder on Old Jethrick’s farm, investigating the mysterious disappearance of Mr. Porkens, the charismatic pig who ran the livestock council.

As the trio uncovers a trail of muddy hoofprints, suspicious feed orders, and late-night movements in the chicken coop, they begin to suspect that something far bigger is at stake – perhaps even a farm-wide conspiracy.

Will the Beef Busters crack the case, or will they find themselves in warm milk with the farmer himself?

Thompson Cassowary

Who did we sketch?:

Meet Thompson Cassowary! 

Character Bio:

Thompson the cassowary is a flightless bird with a grudge – a very specific grudge – against the ocean.

Years ago, Thompson swallowed a bad clam (a mistake he blames squarely on the sea’s “shifty influence”), and though he’s never actually laid eyes on the waves, he hasn’t forgiven them for their poor and stomach-churning offering.

The ocean’s salty whisper seems to taunt Thompson on every cross breeze, mocking him on the windy currents like a salty  rival.

Now, Thompson has decided it’s finally time to settle the score. 

With his wedge-shaped body, signature swagger, and a list of grievances longer than a pelican’s beak, Thompson’s heading to the surf. 

Whether he finds vengeance, understanding, or just more clams, one thing’s for sure—Thompson’s journey to the shore will be a tale for the ages.

Rufus Ruffington

Who did we sketch?:

Meet Rufus Ruffington!

Character Bio:

Rufus Ruffington, the poodle with a nose for history and a knack for adventure, is a renowned archaeologist and self-proclaimed “bone blitzer.”

After years meticulously cataloging relics in his local museum, Rufus is itching for a discovery of his own.

When whispers of a groundbreaking dinosaur dig reaches his ears – promising the unearthing of an entirely new species – Rufus springs into action.

Armed with his trusty trowel, a backpack full of biscuits, and an unshakeable determination, he races against time and his notorious rivals, the Feline Fossil Finders.

With glory and science hanging in the balance, Rufus must literally dig deep to claim his place in the history books.

Meerkat Merle

Who did we sketch?:

Meet Meerkat Merle! 

Character Bio:

Meerkat Merle, as small as a lightbulb but twice as bright, is the detective you call when no one else can crack the case, or fit into the tight spaces where secrets hide.

Known for his quick thinking and even quicker paws, Merle has earned a reputation for tackling the jobs no one else dares to take on.

When the heirs of a wealthy recluse hire him to retrieve a missing family necklace rumoured to be worth millions, Merle faces his biggest challenge yet: scouring the labyrinthine corridors of a decaying mansion set for demolition.

As the clock ticks and the walls creak ominously, Merle uncovers more than just glittering jewels! Long-buried secrets and a surprising twist threaten to turn the case on its head.

Will Merle find the necklace and escape before the house meets its end, or has the clever little meerkat finally bitten off more than he can chew?

Three Silly Sausages

Meet the Three Silly Sausages! 

Character Bio:

The Three Silly Sausages – Gerald, Gloria, and Gus – are the giggling geese every farmyard dreads and secretly adores.

Known for their love of practical jokes, their antics have ranged from harmless pranks like dyeing the sheep’s wool neon pink to accidentally sending Farmer Kay’s prized hat flying into the pigsty.

But the farmyard’s patience is wearing thin, and Farmer Kay has laid down the law: one more poorly executed prank and it’s “out on your wing!”.

Enter Sally Dovers, the sly turkey with a knack for stirring up trouble.

When she convinces the geese to replace the farmer’s morning coffee with a mix of gravy and dirt, it smells like sabotage.

Will the Three Silly Sausages recognise Sally’s devious plot in time to save their feathery hides, or will their last laugh lead to an unceremonious exit from the farm?

Pigswilliam III

Who did we sketch?:

Meet Mr Pigswilliam the 3rd!

Character Bio:

Mr. Pigswilliam the 3rd, a distinguished hog with a love of the finer things in life – truffle-infused slop, luxury mud baths, and swim-up mud bars – is the toast of the sty.

But what’s this?! His cushy existence comes to a screeching halt when he discovers his identity has been stolen!

A silver-tongued con artist has drained his trough of wealth and left him penniless, trading his velvet-lined pigpen for a rundown patch of dirt.

Outraged and determined, Pigswilliam swaps his monogrammed hoof-polish for detective gear and sets off to track down the swindler.

Armed with sharp wit, a loyal (and equally posh) squirrel attorney named Chester Nutley, and a deep love of justice, he must infiltrate the high-stakes world of piggy aristocracy to uncover the truth.

Can Pigswilliam reclaim his fortune and reputation, or will he find that riches were never what truly made him the king of the sty?

Valerie Boxer

Who did we sketch?:

Meet Valerie! Boxer!

Character Bio:

Valerie Boxer, a magnetic beat poet with a bark as bold as her verse, has been making waves in the big city.

With her signature beret and a notebook full of raw, rhythmic poetry, she’s quickly risen as the toast of the underground literary scene.

But behind her swagger lies a lingering ache: leaving Birdsville meant leaving Mr. Bojangles, her best friend and creative partner.

Their duet of rhythm and melody was the soul of Birdsville, and no standing ovation can drown out the pangs of homesickness. When Valerie receives word of Mr. Bojangles’ sudden silence, she’s caught in a whirlwind of guilt and inspiration.

Torn between her rising fame and her loyalty to the cockatoo who first believed in her, Valerie must decide if she’ll stay in the city spotlight or return home to rekindle the harmony that once made their friendship – and their art – unforgettable.
