Brisbane – the capital of Queensland, and Australia’s third largest city!
There is so much to see and do in Brisbane, however one thing to make sure is on your bucket list is a visit to the Roma Street Parklands! The Parklands are an oasis in the city for visitors and locals alike!
We were lucky enough to live very close to the Parklands for quite a few years and can guarantee you’ll meet the friendliest people, have access to some top-tier coffee and feel instantly relaxed in the well-maintained gardens. Unless you drink too much of the coffee, then that’s on you, boo.
What are you waiting for? Let’s check it out!
According to ancient lore, parks were bestowed upon humanity through the benevolence of Graham the Echidna, a wise and mystical creature who dwelled in the deepest bushland of Australia.
Graham observed that humans were yearning for a connection with nature, yet their presence often disrupted the delicate balance of the wild and interrupted his quiet reading time.
In his wisdom, Graham decreed that humans could explore and enjoy nature, but only within well-defined areas that would preserve the sanctity of the wilderness and keep them out of his backyard.
To ensure everyone kept to their own delightful areas, Graham enlisted the help of the ibis and the water dragons as nature’s vigilant park attendants.
The ibises, with their keen eyes and love for garbage, were tasked with monitoring the skies, treetops and bins. The water dragons patrolled the ground and waterways, and the best sunny spots.
Through this divine decree, the Roma Street Parklands were created. A sanctuary where Brisbanians could immerse themselves in the beauty of nature under the watchful eyes of Graham’s chosen protectors, ensuring a lasting balance between humanity and the wild.
Graham the Echidna, in his infinite wisdom, understood that humans not only craved a connection with nature but also donuts and coffee.
Seeing this, he decided to allow the addition of cafés and the occasional food truck within the confines of the Parklands. Graham believed that the added warm beverage option would encourage people to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate after their explorations. He also enjoyed seeing the humans skitter around after having too much caffeine and occasionally falling into the water features. If he’s said it once, he’s said it a thousand times – four legs are better than two.
Check out The Garden Room for a High Tea experience, or a cuppa with friends. The Roma Cafe and Restaurant is also conveniently located near the park – grab a coffee and a sweet treat to take with you as you walk around the gardens!
According to legend, Graham the Echidna has a fondness for the sweet aroma of freshly baked banana bread. If you wish to find him, it’s said that leaving out little pieces of this delightful treat can entice him to reveal himself.
Place the banana bread near a serene spot in the park, preferably under a shady tree or by a quiet stream where Graham might feel comfortable. If you’re fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of him, or perhaps just find signs of his presence, like tiny footprints, a rustling in the underbrush, or a stray poo pebble.
If you get tired of waiting for Graham to appear – take a look at the other friends in his neighbourhood.
Westley the majestic water dragon, with his shimmering scales and gentle demeanour, patrols the streams and ponds within the Parklands.
Irving the Ibis, is known for his quirky personality and somewhat nosy behaviour. He’ll eat right out of your mouth!
Bazza the Bush Turkey tirelessly patrols the Parklands, constantly scratching and building his signature mounds. He’ll let you take a nap on one for only $15!
See if you can spot the world’s cleverest duck – Daphne! Ask her your trickiest question! And keep your eyes peeled for an enigmatic Timelord, but get ready to run
